Prague by Public Transport

Prague's public transport, run by the Prague Public Transit Company (DPP) as part of the Prague Integrated Transport (PID) network, is one of the best in Europe. One ticket works across metro and tram for the duration it is valid, with unlimited transfers.

From OREA Hotel Andel's in the Smichov district, you have two excellent options to reach Old Town Square: the Metro Line B (Yellow) from Andel station, about a 5-minute walk from the hotel, or Tram 15, which runs directly across the river to Namesti Republiky, close to Old Town Square.

Buying Tickets

Tickets can be bought at yellow ticket machines in every metro station, at PID information centres, at Tabak or Trafika newsagent kiosks, and via the PID Litacka app. You can also buy tickets directly on trams using the contactless card terminals installed on all tram vehicles. Always have a valid ticket before entering the metro platform.

Note: These prices are stated as valid from 1 January 2026. Paper ticket prices increased from the previous year; app prices remain slightly cheaper.

Recommendation: For most visitors, the 90-minute ticket (CZK 50) comfortably covers the journey into Old Town. If you are planning a full day of sightseeing, the 24-hour pass (CZK 150) is excellent value and removes timing stress.

How to Validate Your Ticket

  1. At metro entrances, push your ticket into the yellow validation machine at the top of the escalators. It stamps the time. Keep your ticket for the whole journey.
  2. On trams, stamp your ticket in the yellow validation machine immediately upon boarding. If paying by contactless card on the tram terminal, your ticket is validated automatically.
  3. Do not stamp your ticket again when transferring. A single validation covers the whole journey within the time period.
  4. Ticket inspectors can check at any time. The on-the-spot fine is CZK 1,500.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Do not stamp your ticket more than once. Re-validating immediately cancels the ticket and you may be treated as travelling without a valid fare.
  • The 30-minute ticket may not be enough for a relaxed return trip. The 90-minute ticket is safer for most journeys.
  • Ticket machines accept cards and cash. Contactless terminals on trams issue an electronic ticket valid immediately.
  • The Airport Express bus (AE) requires a separate ticket. Standard PID tickets are not valid on that service.
